A few passages I found interesting in Deleuze’s first chapter of Nietzsche et la philosophie
1. The Concept of Genealogy
“The philosopher is a genealogist rather than a Kantian tribunal judge or a utilitarian mechanic.” (2)
5. The Problem of Tragedy
“It smells offensively Hegelian” (11) LOL. This is Nietzsche’s own joke, from The Birth of Tragedy.
“Dionysus, on the contrary, returns to primitive unity, he shatters the individual, drags him into the great shipwreck and absorbs him into original being. Thus he reproduces the contradiction as the pain of individuation but resolves them in a higher pleasure, by making us participate in the superabundance of unique being or universal willing.” (11-12)
“He affirms the pains of growth rather than reproducing the suffering of individuation.” (13)
8. The Essence of the Tragic
” ‘Has existence a meaning?’ is, according to Nietzsche, the highest question of philosophy, the most empirical and even the most ‘experimental’ because it poses at one and the same time the problems of interpretation and evaluation.” (18)
15. Tragic Thought
“Ressentiment is not part of psychology but the whole of our psychology, without knowing it, is a part of ressentiment.” (34)
“Nietsche’s struggle against nihilism and the spirit of revenge will therefore mean the reversal of metaphysics, the end of history as history of man and the transformation of the sciences.” (35)
Deleuze, a long time smoker, would later throw himself out of his Paris apartment before succumbing to lung cancer. His last breath is thought to have been his best.
