What did Proust inherit from Stendhal?

If nothing else, a love of Gothic cathedrals.

And perhaps a persisting suspicion that love does not exist, outside of ourselves. A romantic pessimism. The underlying alienation of things – the fiction of “Society” or salon. Ruthless class hierarchy. But Proust does not hear the guillotines rattle.
