Does Marcel the narrator ever realize Charlus was grooming him? I know the vocabulary is a fairly recent development, but surely after witnessing Jupien and Charlus in the beginning of Sodom and Gomorrah, he would have realized Charlus was pursuing him? And always the juxtaposition with empire, colonies, Africa, or the “orient”, why is sexuality held up against those things?
